Format description
JPEG XL (or JXL) is a new image format with better compression than other image formats like legacy JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and others. Designed for the modern web and with professional photography in mind, JPEG XL offers a more efficient way of storing images. In addition to supporting alpha channels/transparency, lossless, progressive loading and animations, the new image format promises high speed encoding and decoding even on phones.
JPEG XL has experimental support in Firefox, Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers like Edge. For now, you need to enable a feature flag for these browsers to display JXL images. Safari supports only non-animated JPEG XL images since late 2023.
MConverter’s conversions from JPEG XL to other image formats are lossless, so there is no reduction in the quality of your images.
When converting from JPG to JXL, the output quality is mathematically lossless. In all other cases, the JPEG XL image quality is kept visually lossless. Your images will look visually identical.
Common questions about converting to JXL
How to free up space when I have lots of photos I don't want to delete?
Use MConverter to convert your images to JPEG XL (JXL). It's a newer format which uses more efficient compression. This way, your photos will take up less space, while their quality remains visually identical as before. After you have downloaded your converted photos, you can delete the original image files from your phone or computer, and enjoy the extra free space. Later, when you wish to view your old photos, you may convert them to PNG without losing quality, or to JPG.
Will the image metadata be preserved when converting to JXL?
Yes, MConverter preserves as much metadata as possible during conversions to JPEG XL (JXL). This includes the image capture date, geolocation, camera model, and other relevant EXIF information. However, some metadata may be lost if the target format does not support it. Also note that due to a bug on Android, only the geolocation may be omitted when selecting your images.
