Format description
JPEG XL (or JXL) is a new image format with better compression than other image formats like legacy JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and others. Designed for the modern web and with professional photography in mind, JPEG XL offers a more efficient way of storing images. In addition to supporting alpha channels/transparency, lossless, progressive loading and animations, the new image format promises high speed encoding and decoding even on phones.
JPEG XL has experimental support in Firefox, Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers like Edge. For now, you need to enable a feature flag for the browsers to display JXL images.
MConverter’s conversions from JPEG XL are lossless, so there is no reduction in the quality of your images.
When converting from JPG or GIF to JXL, the quality is mathematically lossless. In all other cases when converting to JXL, the image quality is kept visually lossless. Your images will look visually identical.
Common questions about JXL conversions
How to open a JXL file?
If you don't know how to view a JXL file, you can convert it to another format you already recognize. You can use MConverter for the conversion.
Can I convert JXL files in bulk?
Yes, MConverter supports batch converting of multiple JXL files at once. You can even drag and drop folders containing JXLs. Pasting JXL files and folders copied in the clipboard also works: use Ctrl+V.
Can I convert a JXL file, if its size is 10 GB?
Yes, with MConverter Max you can convert big JXLs, up to 10 gigabytes each. The free version lets you convert files up to 100 MB. If you need to convert JXL files over 100 megabytes, try MConverter Max. If your files aren’t over 1 GB, then you can use MConverter Plus instead, as it’s cheaper.
Is converting JXLs safe with MConverter?
For cloud-based conversions, MConverter encrypts your JXL files using the latest technologies, such as TLS 1.3 and HSTS. They are transmitted securely to our cloud service provider’s EU-based data center, which holds internationally recognized ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications. There, each conversion is processed in a separate, isolated environment. This technique further reduces the risk of a malicious file impacting other conversions. Four hours after the conversion is complete, your files are automatically deleted from MConverter’s systems. You can also permanently delete your JXLs and other converted files immediately after finishing the conversion with the trash icon. When converting on-device, your files never leave your device. MConverter processes them locally. Note: on-device conversions are not yet available for some hardware-intensive formats. For both cloud and on-device conversions, your files are never scanned or shared with third parties for marketing purposes. Join thousands who have trusted MConverter to process over 18,005,510 files so far.
How long does it take to convert JXL?
For most images, the wait should be less than a minute. If they are animated, it may take a little longer. However, MConverter also supports converting larger images, meaning that it could take a while (up to over an hour, for example).
