Format description
The AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is a new format which promises better compression and smaller file sizes than JPEG, PNG, WebP, and all other current image formats on the web. Based on the generic HEIF image format, AVIF supports alpha transparency, HDR, lossy and lossless compression. AVIF is already being used by Netflix and Microsoft.
Which browsers support AVIF and since when?
In 2024, all major browsers can render AVIF images. Support in Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (like Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera) has landed in late August 2020. Firefox can display AVIF images from version 93, released in October 2021. Apple's Safari can finally recognize and show AVIF images starting with iOS 16, released in September 2022.
Common questions about converting to AVIF
What settings does MConverter use by default for the image quality?
MConverter's AVIF encoder uses a Constant Rate Factor (CRF) of 10, so that there is no noticeable reduction in image quality while keeping the file size as small as possible.
How to free up space when I have lots of photos I don't want to delete?
Use MConverter to convert your images to AVIF. It's a newer format which uses more efficient compression. This way, your photos will take up less space, while their quality remains essentially identical as before. After you have downloaded your converted photos, you can delete the original image files from your phone or computer, and enjoy the extra free space. Later, when you wish to view your old photos, you may convert them to PNG without losing quality, or to JPG.
Can I convert to AVIF in bulk?
Yes, MConverter supports batch converting to AVIF. You can even drag and drop folders to convert to AVIF. Pasting files and folders copied in the clipboard also works: use Ctrl+V.
Can I convert a file to AVIF, if its size is 2 GB?
Yes, with MConverter Pro you can convert big files, up to 2 gigabytes each. The free version lets you convert files up to 100 MB. If you need to convert files over 100 megabytes to AVIF, try MConverter Pro. If your files aren’t over 1 GB, then you can use MConverter Plus instead, as it’s cheaper.
Is converting to AVIF safe with MConverter?
