About the formats

Extension tar
Category Archive/Compression file formats
Developed by AT&T Bell Laboratories
Mime type application/x-tar

Description

Originally used by Unix/Linux, TAR files are archives containing multiple files inside. Also known as tarballs, TARs are similar to ZIP, but they do not have any compression applied. This makes them quicker to create and extract.

However, it is possible to compress TAR files using bzip2, gzip, or xz compression. To do this, convert the TAR file to TBZ2, TGZ, or TXZ respectively.
Extension tbz2
Alternative extension tar.bz2
Category Archive/Compression file formats
Developed by Julian Seward
Mime type application/x-bzip2

Description

Similarly to TGZ, TBZ2 (or .tar.bz2) files are often found on Linux systems. TBZ2 is a tarball with bzip2 compression, using the Burrows-Wheeler algorithm.
