What is a TAR file?
File extension
.tar
Category
Archive/Compression file formats
Developed by
AT&T Bell Laboratories
Mime type
application/x-tar
Format description
Originally used by Unix/Linux, TAR files are archives containing multiple files inside. Also known as tarballs, TARs are similar to ZIP, but they do not have any compression applied. This makes them quicker to create and extract.
However, it is possible to compress TAR files using bzip2, gzip, or xz compression. To do this, convert the TAR file to TBZ2, TGZ, or TXZ respectively.
Common questions about TAR conversions
How to open a TAR file?
If you don't know how to view a TAR file, you can convert it to another format you already recognize. You can use MConverter for the conversion.
Can I convert TAR files in bulk?
Yes, MConverter supports batch converting of multiple TAR files at once. You can even drag and drop folders containing TARs. Pasting TAR files and folders copied in the clipboard also works: use Ctrl+V.
Can I convert a TAR file, if its size is 10 GB?
Yes, with MConverter Max you can convert big TARs, up to 10 gigabytes each. The free version lets you convert files up to 100 MB. If you need to convert TAR files over 100 megabytes, try MConverter Max. If your files aren’t over 1 GB, then you can use MConverter Plus instead, as it’s cheaper.
Is converting TARs safe with MConverter?
For cloud-based conversions, MConverter encrypts your TAR files using the latest technologies, such as TLS 1.3 and HSTS. They are transmitted securely to our cloud service provider’s EU-based data center, which holds internationally recognized ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certifications. There, each conversion is processed in a separate, isolated environment. This technique further reduces the risk of a malicious file impacting other conversions. Four hours after the conversion is complete, your files are automatically deleted from MConverter’s systems. You can also permanently delete your TARs and other converted files immediately after finishing the conversion with the trash icon. When converting on-device, your files never leave your device. MConverter processes them locally. Note: on-device conversions are not yet available for some hardware-intensive formats. For both cloud and on-device conversions, your files are never scanned or shared with third parties for marketing purposes. Join thousands who have trusted MConverter to process over 17,831,374 files so far.
How long does it take to convert TAR?
For most archive files, the wait is often less than a minute. However, MConverter also supports converting larger archive files, meaning that it could take a while (up to over an hour, for example).
